Galatna

The vessel is handcrafted from recycled copper, patinated and varnished. Galatna is part of Dimitar’s series Grani, which explores the connection between bagpipe music and the traditional Bulgarian rituals of Surva and Nestinarstvo. Dimitar translates the data gathered from his research into visual art pieces.

The Bulgarian traditional rituals of Surva and Nestinarstvo are protected by UNESCO as an intangible heritage. In these rituals, the body is used as the main tool to represent the ideas of life and the afterlife, to unite culture and nature, and to show symbols and powers. The main driving physical and spiritual force of the performance is bagpipe music. Surva symbolises the banishing of evil spirits and preparing for a new beginning. Nestinarstvo is a ritual in which people with bare feet dance on burning coals while accompanied by bagpipe music, to ensure the well-being and fertility of the village.In his exploratory research, Dimitar investigates how these rituals are driven and influenced by music. The artist then translates the gathered data into visual art pieces.
