Rick Gerner and Johanne Jahncke are a Bornholm-based duo focusing on glass and ceramics. Rick and Johanne met on the island of Bornholm. While Johanne has been fascinated by glass for as long as she can remember, Rick discovered his passion on Bornholm when he first came into contact with liquid glass. With a mutual interest in geology, they examine and collect soil from around the world, and use it for their glass and ceramic creations. This natural material has a very special role in their work. To a great extent, they let themselves be guided by the experiences of working with the materials they find. "Building on the Nordic surrounding nature, we aim to create a coherent, recognisable narrative that gives a bodily sense of being rooted."
StoryWith a mutual interest in geology, the duo examines soil from around the world - not from a scientific point of view, but from an aesthetic perspective. Depending on the composition of the soil added to their glass recipes, the texture and colour of their creations vary. Their porcelain glazes made from soil and water create a large range of site-specific colours and textures, depending on where the soil has been gathered, which highlights the geological diversity of the natural world surrounding us.
