Deep Blue Torso Vessel

This ceramic stoneware vase represents a stylised visualisation of a woman’s bust, inspired by Amedeo Modigliani’s portraits of Lunia Czechovska. The inversed T shape of the vase and its elongated neck mirror the aesthetic qualities found in Modigliani’s work. The vessel is entirely hand-built using different techniques such as press moulding, slab building and coiling. The glazing is deliberately restrained to one colour to enhance the features of the vase; the intensity of the blue adds a layer of enigma to it.

This ceramic stoneware vase represents a stylised visualisation of a woman’s bust. The source of inspiration is Amedeo Modigliani’s artwork. Modigliani is well known for his portraits and nudes, characterised by surreal elongated faces, necks and figures. Two portraits of Lunia Czechovska executed in 1919 were of particular interest to Violante. One depicts the sitter holding a fan and the other portrays Lunia’s profile. With this unique sculptural vase, Violante attempted to recreate and reinterpret this womanly and somehow enigmatic figure.
