Imaemon Imaizumi XIV, from The Ateliers of Wonders series

The photograph shows a close-up of a Nabeshima ware pottery pattern as seen at the atelier of the Japanese National Living Treasure Imaemon Imaizumi XIV. The master overglaze artisan uses the sumi-hajiki technique as his primary method. He draws patterns with Indian ink, and then adds a layer of white glaze pigment to the ceramic. The patterns drawn with the ink repel the glaze pigment and, when fired, the ink burns and disappears. As a result, patterns appear against the pigment glaze.
