Transforming paper into little miracles

  • • Asya created a series of ethnic wedding dresses from paper
  • • Her paper wigs featured in a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show
  • • It takes her up to three weeks to make a single item

Intricate lace, sophisticated baroque wigs topped with sailboats, octopuses and flowers, state-of-the-art animal sculptures – the range of Asya Kozina’s paper art is astounding, and it is hard to believe all her works are made of paper. While studying decorative and applied art at Cherkasy National University in Ukraine, Asya tried her hand at different arts and crafts, from aquarelle painting and batik to woodcarving and marquetry, but it was paper which gave her the most fulfillment. Asya takes inspiration from the world of fashion, with Karl Lagerfeld and Jean-Paul Gaultier being particular idols. She is especially interested in ethnic clothing, including wedding dresses. Since 2012, Asya has worked with her husband Dmitry, a designer, who creates most of the sketches for future works.

Skyscraper

Historically, wigs from the Baroque period were often embellished with exotic fruits, flowers and even stuffed birds. While maintaining a traditional aesthetic, Asya and Dmitriy’s fully handcrafted paper versions include symbols of modernity. The Skyscraper series is thus a combination of old and new luxury, where the skyscraper rises at the top of an ornate hairstyle.

Paper Heraldy

Paper Heraldry was commissioned by a German museum. After carefully studying the history of the city as well as the historical attributes of the German nobility of the 18th century, Asya and Dmitriy handcrafted this intricate paper wig, combining complex elements of architecture with floral ornaments, feathers and different symbols of power such as swords and reindeer antlers.

Stylised Japanese & Yaruba Costumes

These paper sculptures were commissioned by a prestigious wallpaper brand. The idea behind creating paper versions of beautiful traditional garments was to highlight the historical link between paper and textiles and to show that paper is also capable of showcasing complexity and brightness.
