Architectural objects

  • • Ihor's specialty is handmade ceramic objects
  • • He loves having the freedom to create
  • • He is inspired by architecture

Ihor Kovalevych was born in Lviv, Ukraine, where he graduated from the ceramics department of the State Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts in 1975. He is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and has been widely recognised for his work, most recently winning first prize in the 4th Biennale Internazionale di Ceramica Artistica, held in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, in 2016. Ihor’s approach to ceramics is very personal: “I try to build my ceramic objects like architectural objects, and to find a balance between the inertia of the material and the spirit of humanity.” His works are exhibited in museums and galleries throughout Europe.

Blue Tower

These two blue handmade ceramic objects were inspired by the ancient architecture of Ihor Kovalevych’s native city. The hollow towering sculptures are decorated with a marine blue glaze. Ihor tries to create his ceramic pieces as sculptures or architectural objects, with material, texture and colour as his building blocks. The two stoneware sculptures were glazed and fired in a gas kiln at 1230°C.

Spring Days Memory

This stoneware sculpture was inspired by the experience of long walks on spring days and explores the idea of nature’s transformation. There is an architectural element to Ihor’s work, where materials, textures and colours are used as building blocks.

Summer Objects

The stability of sculpture and the fragility of ceramics interested Ihor in this work. These three forms were hand shaped from stoneware and the final forms decorated with glaze. Ihor likes to take an architectural approach towards his creations, using textures, materials and colours as his building blocks.

Landscape

This work combines several similar objects to create an overall sense of playfulness. The walls of the stoneware sculptures have been textured with regular lines. The sculptures are made from various combined elements which have purposefully been left evident. Ihor likes to approach his works from an architectural standpoint. He sees materials, textures and colours as his building blocks.

White Towers

The combination of pure white porcelain and bright colours on these hollow towering sculptures was inspired by the Bauhaus. Ihor tries to create his ceramic pieces like sculptures or architectural objects, where material, texture and colour are his building blocks. The two stoneware sculptures have been glazed and fired in a gas kiln at 1230°C.
