Looking at wood with new eyes

  • • Elisa creates flexible and versatile wooden textiles
  • • She uses a unique technique she developed herself
  • • She enjoys making products that people love to touch

Elisa Strozyk transforms wood into a flexible surface by deconstructing it into small, thin tiles, which she then attaches to a textile base. Depending on the size of the tiles and the pattern, each design behaves with a different degree of flexibility and mobility. “I studied textile and surface design at the KHB in Berlin and completed the master’s course in future textiles at Central Saint Martins in London in 2009. During my studies I was always interested in combining hard and soft materials to create surfaces that are very tactile and desirable to touch. Also the idea of movement and transformation from 2D to 3D was important for me. I felt very inspired by wood and the fact that it was once alive.”

Fading Table Runners

This wooden tablecloth can be placed in many ways to take on different shapes, dramatically draped and sculptured or laid flat. The dark-stained walnut is broken down into a grid of connected triangles, confronting familiar materials with an unconventional technique.

Miss Maple, multicoloured

This lampshade combines a familiar material with an unconventional technique. Small triangles of stained maple veneer are applied to a white cotton lining on a powder-coated steel frame to form the shade. It generates a warm light at night and becomes a three-dimensional sculptural object during the daytime.

Miss Maple, black

The black version of this lampshade is made from small triangles of black-stained veneer applied to black cotton fabric, on a black powder-coated steel frame. Combining a familiar material with an unconventional technique, it generates a warm light at night, while the three-dimensional surface transforms it into a sculptural object in daylight.

Septagon Bar-Cabinet

With its three-dimensional surface and exceptional shape, the cabinet resembles a wooden crystal, somewhere between furniture and sculpture. The interior is lined with a light-sensitive padauk veneer whose luminous red colour will fade each time the door is opened. The piece is the result of a collaboration with Sebastian Neeb.
