Finding solutions in paint and colour

  • • Enno developed the paint for Café Roma in Munich
  • • His interest in science helps him understand materials
  • • He often worked with the late Munich designer Ingo Maurer

After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, in 1992 Enno Lehmann became a freelance artist, exhibiting his works throughout Germany. A few years later he set up his own workshop to develop special paints and colour materials for designers, architects and artists. “For years I’d had the idea to mix and produce special paints but then in 1998 designer Ingo Maurer asked me to develop a special colour that he needed for one of his projects, and that’s how it became a full-time profession.” He also takes great pride in teaching painting techniques at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, which gave him the award Landeslehrpreis Baden-Württemberg in 2012.

Finite/Infinite

This egg-shaped sculpture suspended from the ceiling is the result of a project created for Homo Faber 2018 by Enno Lehmann in collaboration with artisan Martin Deggelmann and designer Ingo Maurer. The interior of the metal egg is coated with an intense blue pigment and illuminated by an invisible source of light. A waist-high pedestal supports a mirror reflecting the inside of the cone.

Light cones, Hamburger Hof

Shaped like the funnel of a large ship, this red lighting installation makes use of natural daylight and hidden electric lights to confer an attractive glow in the Hamburger Hof shopping centre on the Jungfernstieg promenade in Hamburg. The challenge for Enno was to create a paint that could rival the strength and depth of pure pigments to lend the inner resonance that is characteristic of Ingo Maurer’s designs.

Luxury Pure

Enno faced a strong challenge with this suspension lamp designed by Ingo Maurer: to create a paint as close to real gold as possible, while maintaining optimal qualities for the production process. The lamp is constructed in ascending layers, with the light seeming to penetrate through each of them.
