The wonderful Tapestry and Art Textile Museum located at the heart of the Old Town of Tbilisi was founded in 1998 by Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, under the leadership of two energetic and passionate professors: Givi Kandareli and Tamaz Nutsubidze. The museum is housed in one of the historic buildings of the Old District, which in the 19th century was an integral part of trading rows of the city.
Visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to walk through the historic district and discover a small and cosy museum with a wide range of textile art pieces by Georgian artists. Alongside the permanent display, the Tapestry and Art Textile Museum regularly organises exhibitions of the work of local textile students, auctions of old pieces and cultural or charity events. Promotion of Georgian tapestry and education of young people is among the top priorities for the museum, which provides the space for the personal exhibitions and new experimental events for young people.
