The Museum of Puppetry operates as part of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre. It opened its doors on the premises of Ljubljana Castle in 2015. The idea behind the project was to honour Slovenia’s greatest puppet artists and the time-honoured puppetry tradition within the Slovenian cultural space, which has never before been systematically researched nor exhibited. With this in mind, one of the primary objectives of the museum is to create the conditions for the proper care and long-term preservation of the Slovenian puppetry heritage.

The permanent exhibition displays around 6000 artefacts, including more than 3000 puppets from the collections of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre archive and renowned Slovenian puppeteers, along with Milan Klemenčič, Dr. Niko Kuret, Jože Pengov and others. As such, it unveils the most important milestones of Slovenian puppetry history as well as various puppetry techniques. Visitors can also test their puppetry skills in the Castle Theatre, where revised versions of original puppet theatre shows are staged.
