Treasure trove of red gold

In the heart of Ravello, there is a small private museum dedicated to coral, traditionally called 'red gold'. This fascinating material is transformed into extremely refined objects by the loving and expert hands of the corallari artisans. The Museo del Corallo was founded by Giorgio Filocamo in 1986 next to his workshop, to preserve and exhibit the collection of pieces handed down to him by his family. This collection was then enriched by him over the years, and is now managed by his daughter Tiffany.

The museum combines coral artworks engraved by Giorgio himself with several coral artefacts ranging from the Roman era to the 20th century, such as necklaces, jewellery, statuettes, relics, rosaries. The Filocamo collection also includes jewels in mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell and turquoise, cameos engraved between the 17th and 19th centuries and 17th century paintings. The exhibition follows the evolution of coral processing techniques, showing the ancient tools used in the transformation of the raw material.
