Donated to the municipality of Toral de Los Guzmanes by the Riojan lawyer Mr. Jesús Gil Gibernau, the Museo del Botijo Español has the largest collection of botijos in the world. The botijo is a traditional Spanish drinking vessel with two spouts and a handle. Because of its importance, the collection entered the World Guinness Record book in 1997 when it had 2000 botijos, a number that has now risen to more than 3000. There are objects here dating from the 18th century to the present day, the oldest being a piece from 1750. The museum opened in 1999 after the impetus of Jesús Gil, that years ago received a botijo in the shape of a male bust on his birthday.

Moved by curiosity, Jesús Gil travelled to Bier, Valencia, where the potter who had created his gift came from and here he saw the whole process of making the piece. This led him to study and locate all the potteries in Spain still making botijos. He visited all the potteries and bought pieces from all of them. That's how he began to collect botijos. The collection takes visitors on a journey through the history of this traditional Spanish object that was an inseparable companion of people, to relieve their thirst and refresh them.
