The Gruuthusemuseum brings the rich history of Bruges to life by showcasing numerous masterpieces of applied arts, from the 15th to the 19th century. Visitors can admire majestic tapestries, Gothic stained-glass windows, elegant wooden sculptures, historical furniture, stylish musical instruments, delicate lace, sophisticated silverware and precious porcelain, among others. Paintings show prominent figures and cityscapes from times long past. A particular highlight is the authentic late-15th-century oratory which connects the museum and the Church of our Lady.

The Gruuthusemuseum became a city museum in 1955, but its origins go back to the second half of the 19th century. It is situated in one of the few remaining 15th-century city palaces in Bruges. The palace got its grandeur and name from its most famous resident, Flemish nobleman Louis de Gruuthuse. His life motto was 'Plus est en vous' or ‘There’s more in you’ – meaning that you can always surpass yourself. This remains a guiding principle for the museum.
