Since its opening in 1873, Nordiska Museet has been showcasing different aspects of life in the Nordics; from the 16th century until today, the museum touches on clothing, housing, cooking, religion, social life and traditions. The collections contain more than 1,5 million objects, including local craftmanship, examples of bourgeois interiors and an ambitious collection of clothing and fashion. Recent exhibitions have covered life in the Arctic in times of climate change, Sami culture and five centuries of Scandinavian jewellery design.

The late 19th century building was designed by architect Isak Gustaf Clason who found inspiration in Danish castles, in particular the royal castles Kronoborg and Frederiksborg. But remember to look past the pinnacles and spiers, the interior is full of beautiful details like the sculptured sleeping bear in the balustrade or the peasants depicted on one of the pillars in the stairwell.
