Venetian experience: Visit with lampwork demonstration

Have a taste of the unique lifestyle of Venice with Simona Iacovazzi, skilled “perlera” – Murano glass beads maker – who handcrafts unique jewels. During a visit to her atelier Perlamadre, in Dorsoduro, Simona will unveil the secrets of lampworking, an ancient and fascinating type of glasswork. Here, Simona will tell her guests the historical highlights of the celebrated Venetian glass beads and illustrate the main traditional techniques of this craft, and how she combines this with her contemporary design and passion for colour. Participants will be shown each phase of the process throughout the demonstration.

Jewellery making

Precious glass jewels born from Venetian traditions blended with contemporary tasteIn her Dorsoduro atelier and shop, Simona Iacovazzi works with fire to handcraft colourful Murano glass beads and precious jewels. Born and raised in Salento, in southern Italy, she worked as a restorer specialising in stone and papier-mâché, when she moved to Venice she met a challenging material: glass. Unstable and fragile, it has a huge potential and, at the same time, strong limits: it was love at first sight. After a lampworking course and a two-year apprenticeship in a Murano furnace, she became a perlera. In 2012, she opened her own business, Perlamadre, where she carries out every step of the creative process, from the design of her unique pieces, in a contemporary taste. Her creations reflect the Made in Italy philosophy with the desire to rediscover the role of craftspeople and of local design. Simona is mainly inspired by Venice and its water – the lagoon, the sealife creatures, rowing – but also, by deep-sea fishing in the south of Italy and by glass itself.
