Visit the unexpected gardens hidden away in the heart of Venice

The visit consists of an introduction to the history of the site and its development, followed by a walk through the gardens to explore the rich botanical aspects of the place and discover its unexpected beauty and peace in the heart of the city. Venice Gardens Foundation reopened the Royal Gardens to the public in December 2019, after carrying out a complex restoration. The Napoleonic-era gardens, today linked again to St Mark’s Square by a drawbridge, occupy an area of about 5,000 square metres. Facing the St Mark’s Basin, they are surrounded by canals and overlooked by the Correr Museum, the National Archaeological Museum and the Marciana Library.

Landscape gardening

Born to protect the green treasures of VeniceThe Venice Gardens Foundation is a non-profit organisation established in 2014 to restore and preserve parks, gardens and other sites of cultural interest. The Foundation promotes, develops and carries out projects which are aimed at protecting the city’s naturalistic and cultural heritage and at bringing recognition to the fundamental role it plays within the community and wider society, in fostering harmony between spirit and nature. All the sites restored by the Foundation are then maintained by the Foundation’s own gardeners, by means of specific programmes. As a member of The Association of International Private Committees for the Safeguarding of Venice, and being listed in the National Research Register of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, the Foundation is also committed to the development of studies about innovation and sustainability of landscape heritage management, together with the organisation of seminars, study days, lectures and courses.
