Palazzo Ducale

Palazzo Ducale, a true symbol of the greatness of VeniceOne of the most famous Venetian landmarks, Palazzo Ducale, or Doge’s Palace, is a true masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The symbol of the political power and greatness of the Serenissima is located next to St Mark’s Basilica and can be seen when arriving from the Grand Canal. Its majestic size is at the same time gentle thanks to its pink and white reflections under the light. Its foundations date back to the 14th century, but the complex structure incorporates previous constructions as well as many Renaissance and mannerist addictions. The wing towards St Mark’s Basin is the oldest one, while the wing towards St Mark’s Square and the canal-side wing, housing the Doge’s apartments and many government offices, dates from the Renaissance. The Palace is a treasure chest full of masterpieces, such as paintings by Tiziano, Tintoretto, Veronese and Tiepolo – among others. The spaces visitors can explore include the Courtyard, the Chamber of the Great Council, the armoury, the prisons and some secret itineraries.
