Burning Falls - A solo exhibition by Koen Vanmechelen in collaboration with Berengo Studio

This solo exhibition showcases the acclaimed conceptual artist Koen Vanmechelen. His cross disciplinary research focuses on glass as the material of the future, degradable and buildable. It requires the fusion of a creative vision with high craftsmanship. Fire is needed to enable its transformations into different states. In our times, Nature is burning, things are changing: this is visualised through the clash of materials – stone, bronze, glass, flesh – in a dance of natural elements, which also refers to the clash of Nature and Culture. The burning mouth of the furnace is the centre of the arena.

Berengo Studio

Glassblowing

The tradition of glass meets contemporary artIn 1989 Adriano Berengo founded the creative glass furnace Berengo Studio with the desire to “make artists think in glass.” Through a cunning combination of craft and creativity Berengo established a unique space wherein contemporary artists could come to explore the untapped potential of the medium and collaborate with the skilled hands of traditional Venetian glass masters to realise their ideas. In the Studio the craftsmen push themselves to their limits, often developing innovative techniques in order to realise an artist’s original visions, in a never-ending creative dialogue whereby years of tradition are energised by artistic thinking. In more than 30 years, over 300 international artists have collaborated with the Studio to make art in glass, including names such as Ai Weiwei, Tony Cragg, Laure Prouvost, Tracey Emin, Thomas Schütte, Erwin Wurm, and Vik Muniz.
