The photograph depicts a fragment of the Japanese National Living Treasure Takeshi Kitamura working at his atelier. Kitamura revived the ancient ra and tate-nishiki weaving techniques, which became obsolete in the Middle Ages due to their complexity. The ra textile is characterised by its delicate mesh, while the tate-nishiki textile uses warp yarns to create patterns.
