Nina Casson McGarva

Glass sculptor

Glass sculptor Nina Casson McGarva was born in Gloucester, UK, in 1990 but grew up in a family of makers near Nevers, France. She trained at the Ecole Nationale du Verre Jean Monnet, a technical college for workers in crystal glass factories, and at the Glass and Ceramics Workshop, Bornholm, part of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The starting point of Nina’s work is nature. The artisan associates the cycles of nature with glass, as the material also goes through a cycle and is at its most alive when it is hot and being transformed. Nina takes a detail of an element she finds in nature, such as a plant, insect, nest or animal, and uses it as an inspirational base to create her own abstraction which then builds into a complex glass sculpture. The artisan uses several different glass techniques, including glass-blowing, kiln casting, as well as fusing.
