Marloes Strata Vessel

The Marloes Strata Vessel, inspired by the extraordinary rock formations on Marloes beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales, has been re-formed from a recycled tin can. Using the highly skilled technique of freehand flame cutting, Claire Malet created three-dimensional patterns and textures. The inner surface of the vessel has been thinly coated with moon gold as well as white gold.

The Marloes Strata Vessel  is part of an ongoing series of works for which the starting point is a tin can, symbolic of mass production. Over many hours the "worthless" can is transformed into a "precious" vessel, which incorporates gold metals. By turning what has been discarded into an object of value, Claire Malet’s work questions our perceived values about materials and objects.
