Japanese artisan Katsuyo Aoki creates sculptural ceramic pieces with a characteristically strong narratives, conveyed through dark subjects and delicate swirling forms. After finishing her Bachelor’s degree in fine arts in painting, Katsuyo continued with a Master's in ceramics at Tama Art University in Tokyo. Ceramics became her primary medium of expression while retaining a painterly brush-like quality. Her creations incorporate a number of decorative styles supplemented by symbolic forms and patterns. These symbolic forms, patterns and decorative styles narrate stories inspired by myths, personal thoughts and allegories. Her porcelain works explore and question many aspects of present-day society, human nature, and our interaction with life and death. These thoughts are in part conveyed through the exaggerated features of her ceramic surface.
