Artisan specialises in the manual manufacturing of high-quality furniture crafted from solid wood. The Artisan factory emerged from Ćostović, a traditional woodwork shop. Channelling Ćostović’s love of wood, along with its 50-years of experience processing it, Artisan began by producing furniture for Dutch and British designers, and in 2007 introduced its own debut collection in collaboration with talented regional designers. Since then, the aim of the workshop has been to reaffirm the philosophy that guides each collection, each piece of wood, with each designer’s vision and diligent craftsmanship. In 2009 Artisan founded ARTECO Wood Technology Centre with the aim of making the company the driving force of a new movement in Bosnia-Herzegovina’s wood industry.
TechniqueWood is first treated with superheated steam to reach an ideal colour. It is then naturally dried in covered, ventilated storage. Once an appropriate moisture level is reached the drying process continues in computer-controlled chambers. Wood dried in this manner is then stored under conditions identical to the living conditions of the people for whom the furniture is made. To create the objects the selected wood is cut to the desired lengths and widths, machine processed, and glued onto boards, which are dried and acclimatised. Next, the object is assembled and finished with natural oils, soaps, wax and varnish.
