"Black Light Tropics" Billiard Table

The billiard table Black Light Tropics, created in a collaboration between the artisan duo Hillsideout and Hermelin Billiards Milan, was built around the concept of a light, elegant, contemporary design. Black Light Tropics is smaller in size and seven times lighter than an American pool table, thus suitable for home use. The table is handcrafted using a mix of Italian and colourful certified Amazonian woods.

The Black Light Tropics billiard table contains a lot of symbolism and history within it and this informs the techniques and materials used in its creation. The woods used are a mix of Italian and colourful certified Amazonian wood. The combination of these different woods results in a highly pictorial piece due to the arrangement of the hand-designed colourful wooden inserts as well as the four table legs, the forms of which were inspired by architecture seen in the paintings of German-American Expressionist Lyonel Feininger. The choice of recycled materials and the form of this piece serve to highlight the challenges the Amazonian rainforest is currently facing.
