This dark ochre-coloured vase is handcrafted from iron-rich, dark brown earthenware clay, fired in an Anagama kiln for close to ten days. No glaze is used to decorate the vessel. The distinct appearance is created by spontaneous changes in colour that occur inside the kiln. Jun Isezaki wraps the pottery with straw before the firing. In doing so, the ceramic vase is imbued with patterns created by the straw combusting onto the clay surface.
