Master of joyful Rangoli

Vijayalakshimi Mohan learnt the art form of Rangoli from her mother, as is the tradition to pass this art form down from generation to generation. It is a widespread type of floor art in India which is thought to ward off evil spirits from homes and welcome guests. She would excitedly follow her mother to their front yard at 05:30 every morning. She would also wander around the neighbourhood, admiring the designs made especially during festivals and then come home to practice and improve them. Nowadays, she makes and teaches Rangoli not only to safeguard the Indian culture in Singapore but also as a therapeutic and social practice. According to Vijaya, the sensory stimulus to one’s fingers, the brain stimulus from the colours and the excitement from the shapes and the movements in performing Rangoli have healing and therapeutic properties.

Red Flower Rangoli

Purple Rangoli
The purple Rangoli design is made on a plexiglass base with golden broken bangles and red pieces of glass glued on it. It is a symmetrical shape from left to right and from the upper and lower parts. Arabesque designs are hand painted with acrylic pens.

Light Blue Rangoli
The light blue Rangoli design is made on a plexiglass base with multicoloured broken bangles – mainly red. Four half marquise shaped designs are distributed equally on the round surface. Nine small bangles with painted flowers are filling the empty spaces.

Sandy Twist Rangoli
The twist Rangoli design is made with coloured sand which reminds the traditional floor Rangoli made of coloured rice powder. The base is in yellow, on which eight fish shapes are depicted in vibrant tones (orange, green and blues) apparently moving around a pond.

Collage Rangoli
This Rangoli is made of coloured paper ribbons which have been rolled and pasted to form a symmetrical design. The base is turquoise, four beige half marquise designs are in each corner of the square, four multi-coloured circles are in between, separated with yellow ribbons.
