Crafting briar pipes
- • Wojtek has run a pipemaking atelier since 2011

Pipemaking is not the most popular of crafts and in Poland there are just a few pipemakers. Katowice-born Wojtek Pastuch is one of the brightest stars of this rare profession having been in the craft since 2011. A true devotee of pipemaking, he is on a constant quest to level up his skills, collaborate with other artisans, and make better pipes. He uses a combination of many techniques from the fields of carpentry, metalworking, jewellery making, and other crafts to create his pipes; it’s a complex, thorough process. It was a meeting with the briar master Domenico “Mimmo” Romeo that inspired Wojtek to start his own pipemaking journey. He later trained with the Danish master Tom Eltang. Today Pastuch runs a successful brand and supplies masterly pipes to connoisseurs all over the world.

Classic briar pipe with silver decoration
The briar root pipe, with a sandblasted finish, is black stained and the chimney edge is polished with a mahogany colour. There’s a removable black ebonite mouthpiece. At the end of the neck, there is a silver decoration with floral motifs.

Cornucopia
This briar pipe, with a polished finish, is made using contrast staining emphasising the colour difference of the wood fibres. There’s a removable ebonite mouthpiece. The shape of the pipe refers to the cornucopia, it is strongly organic, following the grain of the wood.

Freeform
This briar pipe has a polished finish and is handcrafted from wood with a unique, dense grain in a natural honey colour. It has an organic shape and is curved. The pipe uses the natural shapes of the wood. There’s a removable ebonite mouthpiece with a decorative extension.

Whale
This briar pipe is made from extremely dense wood grain, free from defects, in a natural honey colour. It has an organic shape, inspired by a whale, bulbous with a distinct "fin", using the natural shape of the briar root. There is an ebonite mouthpiece, with a decorative element made of Karelian birch on the joint.
