Pottery and poetry

  • • Wenqi incorporates multiple techniques into ceramics
  • • She spends a lot of time in her research stage
  • • Her work is a reflection of her personality

Through her creative approach, ceramic artist Wenqi Liu is continually exploring the potential of clay. “My way of working is at the crossroads between a researcher, a designer, an artist and an artisan. I develop my techniques in a non-traditional way, in order to create links between art, craftsmanship and design”. Wenqi first started a career in fashion before she discovered her love for ceramics. Her sensitivity to materials has led her to develop a unique practice, where she develops and integrates different techniques, such as engraving or painting, into her ceramic work. By incorporating these methods into clay, she creates subtle plays of texture and light, complementing the fragile dimension of porcelain with a poetic edge.

Le soleil de la brume - Chapitre II, N.01

This porcelain piece is part of the series The Sun of the Mist. Through these pieces, Wenqi Liu works on ceramic textures and subtle colour changes to express “reflections of light, shadows of leaves, semi-abstract landscapes glimpsed under the moonlight, or even blurred low-resolution images taken under agitation”.

Le soleil de la brume - Chapitre I , N.03-3

The first chapter of this ceramic series has light and shadow as its main theme. “Shadow, as an existence between abstraction and realism, is the work of the sun. Through the shadows, what we see are non-intuitive things, and what makes the image complete is the imagination of the viewer, which depends on the life experience of each person.” Perspective painting and relief effects: Wenqi Liu explores different techniques through this chapter, thus questioning her relationship to perception.
