The sustainable metalsmith

  • • Tom's blades are made by hand and hammer only
  • • He describes his knives and fishing rods as “functional art”
  • • The steel he uses comes from recycled agricultural materials

Tom Regula's knives and fishing rods are all unique creations, in his own words they “not only work perfectly but are also objects of beauty.” And given Tom's past as a garden designer, a jeweller and an amber carver, it’s not at all surprising. Born in Poland, he has been fascinated by metal forging since childhood and at the age of 7, when he used to crank the bellows at his uncle's forge, he made his first knife. Aged 8 years old, he was already a passionate fisherman with a dislike for mass-produced objects, he modified his first fishing rod and at 16 he received his first commission. Concerned by the harm caused to the environment by the extraction and processing of iron ore and other rare metals, 10 years ago Tom chose to work only with what was ethically available to him.

Eternal Flame split cane fly rod

This is one of Tom Regula’s most beautiful fly rods, the only one of its kind in the world. Hand split and planed from the best quality Tonkin bamboo. The handle is made of Portuguese floor-class cork, combined with stabilized, 600-year-old Scottish spalted beech inserts. The completely unique wood grain patterns resembling a white flame gave Tom the idea for a name for this rod.
