Keeping hold of a family tradition

Cerovečki Umbrellas maintains a 100-year-old tradition in producing handmade umbrellas and parasols, and Thomislav Cerovečki is at the helm. The story began back in 1912 when Mr Mijo Cepanec started his umbrella artisan shop Cepanec in Varaždin. The shop had moved to Ilica Street in Zagreb in 1936 and has been there ever since. Today, the business is run by the fourth generation – Thomislav and his wife Mateja Cerovečki – sadly it is the only umbrella maker left in Zagreb (there used to be eight). Because it is such a cherished tradition, the craft of making the Šestine umbrella in the traditional workshop is on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Croatia.

These strong, premium quality, wind-resistant umbrellas are made from 55% cotton 45% polyester. They are handcrafted with a natural wood shaft with a chestnut, malacca or bamboo handle. The metal ribs are rustproof.

Šestine umbrella
The Šestine umbrella dates back to the mid-18th century. It is a part of the folk costume worn in the Šestine region of Zagreb and a recognisable souvenir of Croatia’s capital. The craft of making Šestine umbrella, with the traditional Cerovečki techniques, is a part of the register of protected non-material cultural goods of the Republic of Croatia. The Šestine umbrella is characterised by the red cotton canopy with multicoloured horizontal stripes on the edges, thick wooden shaft and naturally crooked chestnut handle
