Building beautiful ceramic pieces

  • • Thomas has found his true voice in ceramics
  • • He likes to make things that will actually be used
  • • He is interested in the role beautiful everyday objects enhance daily life

Growing up with creative parents, Thomas Diem's father was a potter and his mother ran workshops in the family home, he was surrounded by craft and clay from a young age. Despite this, he sought to find his own unique voice through further study and by working under other potters, before setting up his studio in 1997. His work is functional, creating beautiful and modern pieces for the home. He draws on pre-existing objects and structures for his inspiration, building on what has gone before him in the world. He is strongly influenced by architecture which can be seen in the simplicity of his forms, and which he incorporates with pops of playful colour. His work combines traditional skills with a contemporary design edge.

Beaker

A clean, simple-shaped beaker, hand thrown on the potter’s wheel, to be used as a drinking vessel. The matt coloured slip at the base contrasts with the strong glossy white glaze finish inside and outside. Tapering outwards from the base, it is a strong, durable and dishwasher safe piece, made to be used in everyday life.

Pitcher

A simple, elegant pitcher. Handthrown on the potter’s wheel, the wider base tapers inwards to a narrower top with soft spout. The strong matt mustard yellow slip at the base provides a nice contrast to the glossy white glaze, and makes it a very tactile piece, that is lovely to pick up.

Trio of bowls

Hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel, this is a neat nesting set of three bowls. Straight sided forms with each having a small nook in the rim which serves as a spoon rest. Perfect for serving up family meals or to create a stylish table setting. A strong matt grey slip at the base contrasts with the glossy white glaze.

Straight vases

These tall, straight-sided vases have a slight spouting effect. Hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel they are simple but strong forms. They are coloured predominantly with a matt coloured slip on the outside but topped off with a white glossy glaze. In small groupings they can add a strong architectural feel to a room.

Nest bowl

This very rounded bowl was hand-thrown on the potter’s wheel. A small rectangular sprig of clay is attached to the rim to serve as a handle and also to create a strong architectural feel to the piece. Two thirds of the outside and part of the handle are covered in a strong, matt mustard yellow slip with the rim and inside being a white glossy glaze finish. It cries out to be held in ones hands.
