The poeticism of paper

  • • Sophie and Frédéric are trained in applied arts and paper making
  • • They create paper sculptures and lamps
  • • Their work stands between craftsmanship and decorative arts

Sophie Mouton-Perrat fell in love with the lightness and the crumpled nature of paper from a young age. For Frédéric Guibrunet, a chemistry graduate, it is the grain and versatility of paper that have always intrigued him. In 2007 these two artisans joined forces in their studio Papier à êtres, with Frédéric structuring the paper and Sophie poeticising it. Together they specialise in hand pleating techniques and papier mâché. The duo crafts paper lighting and sculptures inspired by animation, illustration and 20th century sculptors such as Lalanne and Chasse-Pot. Their delicate sculptures have led them to collaborations with Van Cleef & Arpels and Patek Philippe. Their creations retain lightness and fragility typical to paper.

Mademoiselle

This Mademoiselle trio varies from 95 cm to 150 cm and it was produced at the request of Roche Bobois for its advertising campaign in 2013. These are light sculptures, each of them created following the same principle: a pleated, rounded base, on which a female bust is placed.

Village suspendu

This chandelier represents a hanging village and held by the metal slings connected to the turned wood wire cover. Red electric cables come out of this wire cover and supply light to each “hanging house”. This is Sophie and Frédéric’s first interpretation of a traditional chandelier.

Mademoiselle: Bal Proust

Mademoiselle Bal Proust is the first piece that Sophie and Frédéric made together, and it is a light sculpture and a table lamp made of a luminous pleated bubble dress, on which a woman's bust is placed. Van Cleef & Arpels asked to re-interpret their 2011 Bals de Légende collection based on the model of the Mademoiselle.

Souffleur: Gustave

Gustave is a luminous wall lamp made of white linen paper. It represents a bearded character blowing a pleated paper bubble, from which springs a soft and diffused light. It is an interpretation of a work by Georges de Kerveguen in bronze and glass from 1900.

Circus

Sophie and Frédéric made this wall lamp out of luminous parts in the shape of an 8 in neon, on which they placed a white linen paper sculpture. A piece of turned wood completes the lamp and inside the box there is the electrical system, from which the neon is suspended by a leather strap.
