This coin, realised with the coining technique on a silver planchet, celebrates the World Oceans Day 2020. Oceans cover some two thirds of the earth’s surface and they represent the basis of life. Water is depicted on the front of the coin: with stylised waves, the water laps the Three Towers (the symbol of San Marino Republic). They symbolise how essential water is – for the ecosystem and for human life.

Sandra Deiana was born in Cagliari, Italy, in 1990. Even as a child, she revealed an artistic aptitude and remembers being entranced by her grandmother's handicrafts – such as Sardinian basket weaving. She grew up surrounded by a wide range of ancient Sardinian crafts. "Working with the hands is an intrinsic part of the Sardinian population, which led me to develop this kind of sensitivity.” Today, she has mastered the art of coin and medal making, from sketching out the design to making the plaster model, she combines traditional and ancient techniques with current realities. “I find it really magical that the sculpture in bas-relief can give the observer an incredible plasticity in a few millimetres of relief, as in the case of the coin; this has always fascinated me.”

This bronze medal, with a diameter of 70mm, has a high relief, that highlights shadows and details. The scene consists of two allegorical female figures: “Art” to the right, is giving an imaginary space to "Italy" who is on the left. This space represents Italy’s artistic and cultural heritage and it invites everyone to enhance everything we have.

S’Accabadora Medal (front)
This bronze medal, made with the lost wax casting technique, was made as a run of 40, and is presented in a wooden case, entirely handmade. Sandra Deiana wanted to tell something about this female figure present in Sardinia until a few decades ago – "sa femmina accabadora" – whose task was to give relief to the terminally ill, but sometimes also to give life, by helping mothers to give birth. The medal is a perfect art form that expresses the duality of things, in this case “birth and death”, which are part of the same circle of life.
