Creating paintings out of textiles

  • • Nino's background is as an Art Historian
  • • Her work is inspired by Georgian folk crafts and textiles
  • • She works on large textile pieces – still life, landscape and figurative compositions

Having a background in art history, Nino Kipshidze has developed a special interest in textiles based on her admiration of Georgian folk crafts and textile pieces in particular. After experimenting with easel paintings, handmade paper, bookbinding, etc. she turned to patchwork and felt as the most suitable techniques to express her artistic identity. Combining small pieces of cloth of different colours and texture, including those from old vintage embroideries and fabrics, Nino’s works explore different genres of Still life, landscape and figurative compositions. Despite the largely decorative flavour of multi-layered patches, the distinctive themes and shapes of the objects, the use of perspective, as well as the overall monumental size of the pieces, seem to break the limits of decorative art and enter the realm of painting.

Winter Night

The small-scale composition “Winter Night” is made on a handmade paper with small cloth patches. The square composition has a wide blue paper framing it. The central part features multi-coloured houses against the blue starry sky with light blue dots associated with snowflakes. Inspired by Christmas cards, the work recreates the festive mood of the silent winter night full of expectations and magic.

White Field

The wall hanging named “White Field” is handmade with multiple cloth patches of different colour, material and texture. The overall palette is based on the subtle combinations of whites and greys, with smaller light pink, lilac, brownish green and black accents. The multicoloured flowers on the white meadow and small birds sitting on the branches are irregularly distributed on the surface, which altogether recreates and captures the spirit of the windy wavy fields dotted with flowers.

Still life

This still life is hand-sewn on dark burgundy velvet. The composition is a wide horizontal format. It features a table loaded with fruit trays and vases filled with flowers. The multicoloured patches are of different textures, including vintage embroidery pieces, are used to recreate fruits, flowers and leaves, and irregularly distributed on the surface. The deepness of the dark velvet used as the background contrasts with the bright coloured overlaying patches, which adds a decorative element to the composition.

White still life

White still life is hand-sewn on a linen background using small patches of different colour and texture. The vertically aligned compositions features two flower vases. The overall palette is based on the subtle combination of whites and light blues, juxtaposed with colourful flowers. The low horizon line and a vertical perspective, in which the composition unfolds, add some depth to the overall mood of the piece.

The Spring

This hand-sewn decorative composition named “The Spring” is a wide horizontal format. The background of turquoise hand-dyed and painted silk creates a painterly effect on which the flowers – made of the overlaid patches of different colour and texture – unfold. The painted background, as well as the embroidered pieces of old fabrics, give an overall vintage look to the work. The colours of the flowers, on the other hand, are vivid recreating Spring greenery and brightly coloured blooms.
