The paper weaver

  • • Naomi is part of the Paper Artist Collective
  • • She also makes paper jewellery
  • • Each of her pieces is unique

In the cosiness of her home studio, Naomi Kendall creates her colourful pieces. She discovered her craft only later in life. First, she completed a Foundation Course at Cheltenham School of Art, then pursued her interest in history of art, taking a degree at Leicester University and a postgraduate diploma at Manchester University in gallery and museum studies. Only after a career working in galleries and running community arts projects, did she return to making her own work. Fifteen years ago, she decided to open a studio in her home in Taunton, United Kingdom, and since then, she has been working on commissions and collaborating with different artists. She specialises in paper weaving, using simple tools and techniques that she has developed.

Berlin

Berlin is a piece of hand-cut and woven paper, inspired by a visit to Berlin and the colours of a building in Steglitz. It uses brightly coloured paper. The piece is made with strips of paper which are woven through a piece of white backing paper. The strips are tightly woven, creating an effect similar to a tapestry.

Bright

Bright is made using hand-cut, folded and woven paper. The piece uses a calming colour palette of blues and greens with highlights of pink. The triangles are made by cutting strips and folding strips of paper in a similar technique to origami. These are then woven through a backing paper. The piece is very rhythmic and evokes the landscape where the artist lives.

Latitude

This piece is part of a collaborative project with other artists from the Paper Artist Collective, a global community of artists working with paper. It was made for a calendar which was sold to support Art Refuge. Latitude represents the month of November and the colours of nature at this time as you travel across the globe. It’s made from paper strips which are hand cut and woven into a backing paper. The hexagonal forms interlock creating a dense texture.

Lock

Lock is a piece the artist created when she lived in Barcelona and was made during a strict lockdown. The colours are blues, greens, yellows, oranges, pinks and purples. It’s a vivid piece and evokes the views of flowers and sky from her balcony which was the only outside space she was allowed to spend time in. The triangles are created from hand-cut squares of layered paper which are tucked into a backing paper.

Trelew

Trelew is a piece Kendall created for a home in Cornwall. The work uses paper strips, hand-cut and woven through a backing paper. The earthy palette of reds, pinks, greens and blues is inspired by the colours in the garden and for the client who finds some colours difficult to see. This weaving technique creates a slightly three dimensional surface as the edges of the paper strips lift the cut backing paper.
