Sensuous clay

  • • Myrto creates sculptural yet functional vessels
  • • She previously worked as an architectural designer
  • • Working with clay helped her find her creative spark again

Myrto Zirini has found in clay a therapeutic process: a practice that grounds her. After working in architectural design for several years, she felt an urge to create with her hands and become “a maker more than designer”. In her workshop located on the island of Corfu, Myrto explores the potential of clay through the creation of a series of vessels. She draws her inspiration from all three-dimensional forms, such as cocoons or pebbles, in which she studies the textures, the contrast of colours and how the light travels through them. Her organic shaped ceramics thus question the void and the inner space of the object. Their harmonious curves seem uninterrupted “as if the force of gravity was not present while I was working on it”, as she explains.

Aperture

This hand built sculptural composition consists of hollow organic pebble shapes balancing inside each other, which creates a different aperture depending on the placement of the four separate pieces. The white monochrome enhances the harmony among the four forms.

Transformer No.1

This composition consists of three stackable pieces on a metal axis: a rectangle, a flat ovoid sheet and a doughnut shape at the top. This artwork is part of an upcoming sculptural series. It is as a physical reminder, a memorabilia of the internal ability to quiet the mind.

Cocoon lamp

This hand crafted lamp is shaped in a cocoon-like form with an indirect LED strip light. The exterior texture is rough, while the interior is burnished. The contrast of these textures but also of colours – the inner part is coloured with yellow slip – enhances the harmonious shapes and curves of the lamp.

Shallow Pebble platter

The form of this hand crafted platter is inspired by the shapes of pebbles. The internal green slip colouring and glazing is contrasting with the rough finish of the external part. This contrast thus provides a dialogue between textures and colours.

Deep Pebble serving bowl

This hand crafted bowl was made with grey stoneware. Its organic concave shape is inspired by the structure of pebbles, with soft and harmonious curves. The external part has a rough finish and thus contrasts with the inner red slip colouring.
