Seeing the beauty in decay

  • • Momoka fell in love with textiles while studying kimono dressing
  • • She works mainly with cotton denim and silk yarn
  • • To her, ageing and decay are positive notions and a source of inspiration

Born and raised in Tokyo, Momoka Gomi knew early on that she would become a craftswoman. Even when she was a child, she admired people working with their hands. She has always been fascinated by the process of making, no matter the skills, tools and materials involved. At the age of 15, when she joined a two-year course in kimono dressing, she fell in love with textiles. Momoka enrolled in an art degree at university where she focused on weaving. Then she received a scholarship and moved to the UK to complete her studies, exploring different materials and forming her own style. Since then, Momoka has been living in Nottingham, where she set up her studio to hand-weave fabric with a mechanical dobby loom. She works mainly with cotton denim and silk yarn.

Recollection 5-2

This framed art piece is made of hand-woven denim, using cotton and polyester warp and silk and cotton for the weft. The woven textile pattern has been created organically during the weaving process to represent the memory deconstruction and recollection in our brain.

Recollection/Mini mini artwork

These are mini art pieces intended for home decoration, hand-woven with denim made of cotton and polyester warp, Como silk and cotton for the weft, and finished with HTV (gold foil). Durable, robust and beautiful denim symbolises the passing of time and the beauty of ageing. The plain weave, the simplest woven structure, creates a new look for the fabric.

Recollection 1-1

This framed decorative piece hand-woven with denim is made of cotton and polyester warp, and silk and cotton for the weft, and is then finished with HTV (gold foil). According to the artist, the weaving process mimics our memory, which is made of layers of experiences. This woven piece is characterised by multiple lines of denim stripes, symbolising the passing of time.

Decay jacket

This is the first jacket made by Momoka Gomi with the so-called Decay fabric, a hand-woven denim whose surface is aged by time and decorated with shining gold foil symbolising repair and mending. The jacket is part of a wearable craft project, based on Momoka’s interest in the relationship between body and textile and the function of fabrics in our society.
