Straw marquetry jewellery

  • • Mélanie dyes straw from environment friendly plants
  • • She plays with countless nuances of colours
  • • Making jewellery from straw is her specialisation

It was a summer day in 2014 that marked a turning point for Mélanie Richet. She searched the internet and came across a description of the technique and the necessary equipment for straw marquetry. Since it only needed very little material, she decided to give it a try and bought what it takes to get started. From her first try, it was obvious that straw was her material! She became fascinated by its singular aesthetic, the way light dances on its surface, its mineral side, sometimes almost metallic but also warm, and its countless nuances of colours. After several years of intense practice, in 2018 she opened her workshop and specialised in contemporary straw marquetry jewellery and straw dying. Mélanie is originally French but she lives in Germany. She is influenced by the stories and traditions of both countries in this specific craft, with their similarities and differences.

Beauty of Error

At the heart of her Material series is a theme very dear to Mélanie: singularity, which makes each living being so precious and each unique object so interesting. For this brooch, a wisp of straw that did not turn dark blue like the others when dyeing. You could say it's a failed dye. But it also has its beauty.

Ondulation d’un paravent

This brooch should, in fact, not have existed. Mélanie Richet just wanted to test a pattern and think about some technical points. The front finished; it was clear that this test was going to become a jewel. And since the materials used are very light, it would be a brooch, fascinating for its play of light and pleasant to wear.

Tout ce qui brille II

The straw has very mineral, almost metallic reflections and we understand why Rumpelstilzchen, in the tale, transforms it into gold. But all that glitters is not gold. Mélanie Richet reflects on a recurring theme in her creations: being and appearing.

Anacoluthe

Mélanie made this bookend for a competition organised by the Deggendorf Craft Museum, where it was exhibited as part of the exhibition Stützen der Gesellschaft – Buchstützen neu entdeckt (Pillars of society – bookends rediscovered). She used three motifs symbolizing different periods of writing: the pen, the keyboard, the screen.

Industrie

Mélanie Richet wanted to allude to industrial style with this pattern made up of black rectangles, many shades of grey, gold, and brown. For each piece in her Industry series, Mélanie draws the pattern directly on the object and does not plan the colours in advance so that each object remains truly unique.
