This silk ochre crepe tapestry (dyed naturally with coffee and turmeric) is hand-embroidered with white silk thread. It’s a decorative element hanging from a wooden stick to be attached to a wall. It has been crafted following the embroidery technique typical of the Spanish "Mantón de Manila" shawls. The sides are made with hand-rolled hems and the bottom is finished with long silk fringes knotted by hand with the technique of macramé.

From Valencia with love

Marta Benet Morera is a Spanish artisan, designer and architect based in Italy. She grew up in a very crafty area, in the city of Valencia known for its ceramics and textiles, where women have clothes made by seamstress. After having trained in fashion, Marta opened her own studio focusing on made-to-measure, however, she soon got tired of focusing only on dressmaking and after a couple of years she moved to Milan and started dabbing into the other traditional Valencian craft: pottery. Today, she runs a studio in the outskirts of Mantua where she offers consultation and creates ceramic objects which look back at the old traditions of her native city but are infused with a contemporary twist.

This wall sculpture was made with stoneware and framed on a linen canvas. The sculpture has been made with a very thin slab of stoneware stretched manually with a rolling pin. Then it was modelled by hand to imitate the shapes and folds of fabric. Its edges are irregular – like a torn sheet of paper – and its finish is completely natural and raw.
