These hemisphere shaped bowls are slip cast in pastel fine bone china in layers and fired at 1280 degrees Celsius. To reveal the hidden layers of the material and alter the topography of the surface, Manos used a diamond for polishing. Each bowl from the Amoeba Series is unique.

Creating ceramic jewels
- • Manos' approach to ceramics is very experimental

At the age of 29, following 14 years working as a chef, Manos Kalamenios left London and enrolled in a course at the University College Isle of Man, for Art & Design. “Once I arrived in the ceramics room I was hooked,” Kalamenios says. After graduating with a Masters in Ceramics & Glass at the Royal College of Art in London, Kalamenios started his workshop in the summer of 2016. Being creative and crafting with his hands has come naturally to him since he was a child. In his own words: “My love and respect for the material took me to where I am now”. Collectors of his objects describe them as “Ceramic jewels you can’t wear, understated and timeless pieces of magic that you love to look at every day.”

Missing
This round shaped porcelain frame was slip cast with Limoges porcelain in blue and white. The frame is vitrified at 1280 degrees Celsius with additions on the surface of porcelain fragments to give more texture and an aged feel. This porcelain frame was part of a wall installation of many other porcelain frames.

Spume
This piece was created as a sample for a wall light installation. It is made of slip cast fine bone china complemented with a hidden layer of orange. When lit from behind, the hidden colour reveals itself through the cracks, making it look like molten lava.

China bowl
Fine bone china bowl hand carved like a stone, with a translucent finish. It was fired twice, the second time with a gold lustre on its rim, whose shimmer contrasts with the matt surface of the porcelain.
