Processional giants

  • • Lieve specialises in custom-made willow baskets and processional giants
  • • She loves sharing her knowledge with students
  • • Sustainability is crucial to her way of working

Lieve Lieckens practices a modernised form of basket weaving, based on traditional techniques. Sustainability is key to her method: she only uses locally cultivated willow. Lieve became inspired after meeting a female basket weaver at a local market. “I was fascinated by what she was able to create with some willow branches. It was love at first sight.” She learned from different masters, followed classes at the French basketry school in Fayl-Billot, and continues to follow masterclasses all over Europe in a constant quest to improve her skills. She also loves sharing her own knowledge by giving courses and workshops, as well as providing coaching and consulting. Apart from baskets, she works on processional giants, part of a folkloric Belgian tradition that is recognised by UNESCO.

Willow Bowl

A hemisphere basket, on a wooden circular base, with ‘French randing’ and elevation. The handles are integrated, following the form of the bowl. In the weaving process, different types of peeled willow were used, to obtain a mix of white, brown and black colours.

Shopping basket

This is an oval shopping basket, woven with the traditional ‘French randing’ technique, with rope handle. The use of several types of unpeeled willow branches accentuate the beauty of this basket. In this case, the willow types ‘Belgium Red’ and ‘Salix Purpurea’ are the perfect match.

Laundry basket

This kind of rectangular basket with handles is traditionally used to transport clean laundry. These ‘white’ baskets are made of peeled willow. They are usually called ‘grandmother's laundry baskets’, because they last so long.

Towel basket, bathroom

This cylindrical towel basket with an elegant shape is made for use in a bathroom. It was created with a common technique: ‘Irish knot’. The material is a green willow type, ‘Salix Purpurea’, which gives it a natural, shiny look.
