The sculpted relief is revealed by the ambient light. Each scale of paper takes on a particular colour depending on the light and shadows. Some may seem coloured, though the paper remains free of any pencil lines. The motif that emerges from the paper evokes the plumage of a bird, or even the seabed.

With the greatest delicacy, Lauren Collin sculpts paper with a scalpel. The French craftswoman creates unique paper bas-reliefs using her very own technique. Lauren was originally an interior architect; she graduated from ESAG Penninghen in Paris in 2011. As she entered professional life, working for an agency, she found herself with free time in the evenings and decided she wanted to create with her hands. And this is how she slowly developed her graceful technique, using scalpels initially borrowed from her father, a stomatologist. Lauren finely carves watercolour paper of different thicknesses and textures. Gradually, small petals emerge from the surface, creating a dialogue with light.

Paper piece with golden wax
This sculptural paper piece is made from a sheet of watercolour paper to which Lauren Collin added traces of golden wax with a brush. Lauren then carved into the wax with surgical blades, creating movement and reflections. Depending on the direction of the carved notches, they may capture the light to create a raised pattern. This artwork reveals a different composition depending on its orientation.

This sculptural paper piece is made from very soft textured paper to which Lauren Collin applied traces of blue grey watercolour. She then carved the paper with surgical blades without following the path of the brush or any drawing. With this piece, Lauren hopes to provoke a feeling that's personal to every viewer, so it is difficult for her to name her creation or to describe what should be seen.
