The harmony of sharp angles

  • • Kubo is an architect by training
  • • He is a fan of innovation
  • • He likes to share his knowledge

The pieces created by Kubo Novak mesmerise the audience with the sophisticated play of shapes, edges and light. Despite the mind-boggling first impression, their effect is calming. They satisfy the human perception of geometrical precision and the pure beauty of angles. Ones worries are forgotten when transported into this flawless universe. Kubo himself experiences this during the creative process: "I love to be on my own in a room drawing the designs or folding the paper. I get lost in time and hours just fly by." These hours definitely pay off: Kubo creates fine art for interiors across Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. The universal language of geometry has no borders.

Pleats

Pleats is a series of sharp triangular folded paper reliefs, on a soft background. Kubo Novak set out to create a series of smooth, soft-flowing compositions with a natural inner order. The resulting pieces remind Kubo of some tiny ocean lifeforms formed by the strict rules of physics and evolution.

Interlock 6–I

This yellow wall piece, a paper composition handcrafted from 77 modified hexagonal forms, is inspired by a motif that Kubo Novak found in the Doris Schattschneider´s book M.C. Escher "Visions of Symmetry." According to the source, Escher copied the motif into his notebook in 1937 from a 1923 scientific paper by German crystallographer F. Haag.

Pleat 2

This closed-shaped pleat, handcrafted from paper, is firmly attached to its plain paper background. Enclosed in its expressive spiky shell resides something vulnerable and shy.

Sketch S88

Kubo Novak switched his usual tiling method for a freer approach, a type of zig zag doodle drawn on a square grid. Kubo then took the drawing and used it as a foundation for this paper relief. The result is less pre-calculated and more intuitive compared to his other series.

M.C. Escher loved to depict grids of pentagons, which served Kubo Novak as a geometrical skeleton for this piece. The piece, velvety blue coated paper, is made up of 60 pyramids. This pentagonal pattern has a four-fold symmetry and can be derived from a square grid. There is a kind of tension between the felt square grid background and the pentagonal figures in front of it, which Kubo especially likes.
