From cutlery to jewellery

  • • Kinga previously worked in the film industry
  • • She opened her studio 14 years ago
  • • She is a pioneer of new techniques

Kinga Huber first tried her hand at jewellery at the Secondary School of Visual Arts, then continued her studies at the Department of Object Design at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. After graduation, she received a one-year scholarship from the Studio of Young Artists (FISE) to design a set of cutlery. Three different designs were made, and she ended up with two small sets of spoons, knives and forks: one was later bought by the Museum of Applied Arts and the other by a German cutlery collector. As cutlery making was not overly popular in Hungary at the time, she was forced to change direction. Kinga went on to work in the film industry for about 15 years, making costumes for film productions and commercials. Around 14 years ago, she returned to craft and started creating jewellery pieces. She was a founding member of the Jewellery Night Budapest (ÉÉB), which promotes contemporary jewellery to a wide audience.

Pointing at each other

This silver, partly gold plated piece is part of the Senseless Roles series. Kinga Huber’s jewellery has a strong conceptual approach: her pieces reflect the chosen or given roles of women. Like her lip jewellery, this finger jewellery cannot be worn in any usual way and therefore fulfill the functions of traditional Jewellery.

Childhood Trauma

The porcelain doll once belonged to Kinga’s mother in her childhood and miraculously it remained intact. Its arms are torn off, bandaged, and secured slightly higher up. The heart has fallen and is hanging below. The harsh formulation is a stark contrast to the delicate, white, charming face of the porcelain doll. The role of blood is embodied by the different coloured corals and the temporal distance by the tiny white pearls.

Shut Up!

This lip jewellery is part of the Senseless Roles series, in which Kinga Huber reflects on the roles women have chosen or are given. This piece is made of 925 sterling silver, using the lost wax casting technique and finished with a special blue rhodium plating. The pearl represents the precious gift of keeping your mouth shut. The artist won the Athens AUTHOR Prize in 2020 with this series.
