Decking the book by its cover

  • • Julie is inspired by the rigour and refinement of Japanese art
  • • She received the Youth Fine Craft Prize in 2015
  • • Her bindings echo the feelings sparked by the book

Julie Auzillon has been binding books since 2003. “At first, I wanted to do illustration, something visual. I soon realised that bookbinding was a type of contemporary creation in which the technical aspect of building a book is paired with creativity. This suits my profile well and I liked it right away." After she graduated from the renowned École Estienne, Julie set up a small workshop at her home and worked on her first commissions, for artists or luxury brands. Technical constraints and the content of a book are the two great sources of creativity for Julie. They often lead her to finding and developing new binding techniques. In 2013, she opened her workshop where many institutions, bookstores, and bibliophiles now reach out to her to beautify their most precious books.

Montmartre vécu par Utrillo, by Francis Carco and Maurice Utrillo

This book was bound with rods in white calfskin and painted in shades of opaline green and gray. The edge-to-edge linings are in gray leather. The titanium hinges and the paper used for the flying guards are green to match the cover. The head slice is gilded with white gold.

Venise seuil des eaux, by Paul Leclère and Kees Van Dongen

The binding for this book was made with rods in white calfskin and a royal blue decor divided into two contrasting parts. The edge-to-edge linings are in royal blue painted leather. The hinges are in matching blue titanium. The head slice is gilded with white gold. The flying endpapers are made of Vietnamese paper tinted in light blue.

Petits contes nègres pour les enfants des blancs, by Blaise Cendrars

The binding for this book is made with rods in white calfskin and painted with vertical lines, in terracotta shades. The same leather is used for the edge-to-edge linings. Colour matched titanium rods are used for the hinges. The endpapers are made of kakishibu-dyed Japanese paper.

Les Jardins, by Anna de Noailles

This book is bound with rods in natural calfskin and painted with ink in shades of green, and forms evoking plants are printed in rotogravure over the top. This motif continues on the edge-to-edge linings made of the same leather. Matching green titanium rods are used to make the hinges. The flying endpapers are in ecru Vietnamese paper striped with iridescent white ink. The three edges of the book are gilded with white gold. An original fragment of the rotogravure matrix, inked and lacquered, is enclosed in a separate folder.

Le Marronnier, by André Pieyre de Mandiargues

The binding here is made with rods, in white calfskin, decorated with ink in shades of pink for the upper part, and green for the lower part. This motif continues on the edge-to-edge linings. The hinges are in matching pink titanium. The cover pages are made of handmade Vietnamese paper, dyed with green ink.
