The art of axe making

  • • Julia is fascinated by forging
  • • She uses drop forging for top quality edges
  • • She brings modernity to ancient tools and traditions

At the age of 19, Julia Kalthoff developed a fascination for forging. Without the funds to pay for a course, she contacted an axe factory and asked if she could work to pay for the training. The course led to a summer job and eventually to a position as managing director at a sister company. Preoccupied by all the small details required to make a good axe, Julia started to explore woodworking to better understand the tool. After a business degree, she developed a carving axe and started making it to order. Since then, she’s been making high quality axes for craftspeople and office workers alike. Despite the urban location, or perhaps because of it, she attracts a great deal of local interest and regularly holds courses.

The blade of this axe is handcrafted from Swedish carbon steel and the handle made from Swedish ash. As important as the axe has been throughout human history, its core contemporary utility has somewhat changed. Working with your hands makes you relate and connect to the world around you in a more respectful and humble way. Craft and nature also work as a calm oasis for many people in this fast spinning world. The axe embodies strength in so many ways.

The Small Carver axe, its blade forged from Swedish carbon steel and its handle from Swedish ash, was created in collaboration with renowned wood carver Beth Moen. The small carver is a speciality axe and a precision tool. It is useful in a variety of carving jobs, from removing lots of material to fine cutting surfaces. The 550 gram axe head is easy to swing. The edge comes ready to use and will hold a sharp edge for a long time. The 30-32 degree angle works well for both soft and hard wood. Hardened to 58 Rockwell, it has good edge retention and is still easy to sharpen.

This axe, its blade built from forged Swedish carbon steel and its handle from Swedish ash, is balanced just below the axe head, which makes every gram work to the user’s advantage. When carrying out precision work, the axe feels lighter because your grip point is the same as the balance point. When you need to remove lots of material and need more power, you grip closer to the end knob, so the entire weight is working for you.
