Silver jewellery through the generations

  • • Joe and Ngoni are a jewellery maker and silversmith who work together
  • • They specialise in techniques such as lost wax, cabochon setting and using trade beads
  • • They are both training their sons in their crafts

Joe Mutoko and Ngoni Chivasa are silversmiths for Ndau Collection, a jewellery workshop in Victoria Falls. Joe is a third-generation jewellery maker and a descendant of the Ndau people who are renowned for their jewellery making and ironsmithing. He started at the workshop in 1993 as a cabochon stone cutter and doing necklace assembly, and now heads the team. Ngoni was promoted to the workshop in 2003. An all-rounder silversmith, he specialises in etching. Joe and Ngoni work with gemstones, recycled materials such as bones and stones and use trade beads sourced from East Africa. Both are inspired by nature, the richness of their artistic heritages, and the workshop’s founder and her daughter. Joe and Ngoni are training their sons, creating family legacies by passing on the knowledge of their craft to the next generation.

Fractal necklace

This necklace is made by stringing five hand-beaded strands through several triangular panels. These elongated triangles have been hand-rolled and cut, and are made of brushed and finished sterling silver. The panels point in alternate directions and provide a frame to the necklace. The strands feature a selection of turquoise and blue antique and contemporary African trade beads. These are interspersed with handmade sterling silver seed beads.

This ring is made of sterling silver using the lost-wax casting process. The head of the ring features a miniature heart-shaped leaf from the indigenous Mopane tree. It is cast from an original design created by artist Moses Kalembela and has fine-veined detail. The leaf is mounted on a flat band ring shank.

Millefiori ring

This ring features an antique Venetian millefiori glass trade bead set in three sterling silver bands that are mounted onto a half D-ring shank. The tubular bead features a pattern of navy blue, white, terracotta and mustard yellow colours. Setting the bead requires great patience as it can crack under the application of heat.
