Stained glass poetry

  • • Isabelle aims to bring stained glass back into today's living spaces
  • • She approaches her glass works as paintings
  • • She specialises in the Tiffany and lead method of stained glass making

Isabelle Adragna revisits the art of stained glass through interior design and architecture. Her poetic creations adorn spaces with light and colour, bringing a contemporary outlook to this age-old artistic tradition. After a 20-year career in administration, Isabelle naturally turned to craft as a way of reconnecting with her creativity and her love of working with her hands. "Glass was self-evident for me," she states. In her creations, she likes to associate glass with other materials such as copper, brass, or leather, thus playing with different textures. Inspired by art deco styles, painters like Modigliani, or poets like Cocteau, Isabelle uses glass as her means of expression to tell stories and engage in a harmonious dialogue between past heritage and contemporary design.

Précieux

This stained-glass window of bright colours was custom-made for a beautiful home in Bordeaux. It is inspired by jewellery and its precious nature. The composition, featuring a repeating flower motif, was imagined as a cuff bracelet and plays with the codes of the Art Deco style. The half-flower is also a nod to a shape that is very common on door transoms in Gironde, a region of France.

Palmyre

This mirror has been reworked and given an artistic touch. The glass seems to be gradually filled with palms, each in a different material. Some are in opaque glass (black and beige), others in hammered brass and still others in leather, creating a fine interplay of textures.

Les Baigneuses

This composition, featuring swimmers who appear to be diving, was imagined as a wallpaper. It is a motif that could be repeated endlessly. Inspired by Art Deco, the glass has been worked in a play of geometry, asymmetrical repetition and mix of textures. The swimwear and swim caps are in copper, contrasting with the luminous blue glass background.

Alice

This glass composition was inspired by Modigliani and his portraits of women with long noses. The design was originally part of a mirror created by Isabelle Adragna, and as a nod to this work, the fragments of opaque black glass symbolise the lead she uses in her stained glass. The stained-glass technique requires a lot of offcuts, which generally cannot be reused. This work was therefore designed and created from scraps of glass, which were then broken with a hammer. The glass dust produced by the shattering was glued to a canvas frame, just like a mosaic.
