This light brown oak office set by Hendrike Farenholtz is composed of a desk, a set of drawers and two rectangular stools. The table has two pull-out panels to enlarge the working space of the table top. The set of drawers has five drawers, each of them able to hold paper and objects up to A3 format. After work, both the stools and the set of drawers can be pushed under the table, changing the desk into a small wooden block.

A carpenter with a knack for design

After her anthropology and art history studies, Hendrike Farenholtz decided to become a carpenter. This training led her to travel around as a journeywoman learning from master craftspeople including Andrew Kindler in London and Sir Terence Conran in Salisbury, as well as some time in Sarawak, East Malaysia, thanks to a scholarship. In 1989 Hendrike opened her own workshop in Hamburg where she has been working on her signature furniture ever since – bespoke pieces where sober and elegant forms meet clever functionality. Even years later, the process of gluing individual solid wood parts into a three-dimensional object never ceases to surprise her. “Every time it is an exciting moment for me and a little surprise in terms of expression and the spatial effect.”

Stair shaped cabinet
This Hendrike Farenholtz cupboard is tall and narrow with three steps at the front to climb up and reach objects stored in the upper part. The American cherry wood gives the cupboard its warm colour. The right door holds additional little shelves and drawers for smaller objects. When the two doors are open, the cupboard's interior slightly resembles a winged altar.

Square table
A signature Hendrike Farenholtz piece, this square table has eight drawers spread over all four sides. The table has a blue square glass top in its centre, which can be changed into a slate plate. Both glass and slate are tough, sustainable materials, making the table suitable for hot dishes or wet bottles and leaving no stains on the surface.

Chairs and table
This Hendrike Farenholtz set comprising a little table and two chairs, made of American cherry wood, is a cosy space for two people to talk, eat and drink. The legs of the table and chairs consist of separate wooden battens to make the design look more elegant and also to reduce the overall weight. The upper ends of the wooden battens show in the table top, creating four beautifully decorative darker rectangles. For comfortable sitting, the chairs have white leather cushions.

Writing desk
The little desk offers a pull-out panel on the right side to enlarge the working surface. At the back of the table there are three open shelves for paper storage and a fourth lower shelf with space to store books and other larger objects. Hendrike Farenholtz chose sonokeling (rosewood) with a dark brown, warm colour. The fine construction of this desk makes it a perfect fit for laptop users in small apartments.
