The porcelain vases of this collection are inspired by imagery of rain and gutters. These four vases are slip cast from white porcelain. The four are decorated with different transparent glazes with green, orange, blue and copper oxides.

Born on the volcanic Westman Islands, Guðný Hafsteinsdóttir is influenced by the primal elements of water and fire. The experience of living beside a volcano, on the edge of the sea that was alive with fishing boats and under skies full of birdlife, has left a permanent impression on Guðný. It affects how she approaches her ceramic practice to this day. She is also inspired by Iceland’s rich tradition of storytelling. Her work is characterised by a mix of playfulness, narrative and humour, while taking on themes of nature and the environment. She often combines other materials with clay, such as glass and wood, creating work with a contemporary Icelandic voice.

Cormorant
This dinnerware set, handcrafted from slip cast porcelain, was made for Mar restaurant in Reykjavik’s old harbour area. The main inspiration was the ocean and wildlife, including the cormorant from which the name, shape and colour of the set derives. The brown, orange and black all have multiple tones and harmonise with each other and bear a resemblance to the volcanic rock and lava that Iceland, particularly the Westman Islands, is famous for.

YOLO
YOLO stands for You Only Live Once. This saying resonates with the fact that we only have one earth. This has given form to this series of porcelain pendants inspired by the form of a yoyo and the earth. The glaze is reminiscent of images of earth as seen from space. The two halves are cast, fired separately and finally glued together.

Yolo and vases
This set of cast porcelain vases are part of Guðný Hafsteinsdóttir or rain gutter series and the YOLO series. The vases are all glazed with high fired transparent glaze and lustre for the last firing.
